"It’s racism — not race — that affects Black women’s health."
Dr. Kiarra King, OB/GYN
Allostatic Load, is an assessment of biomarkers to determine the degree of health deterioration in a person. Studies have shown that Black women have the highest allostatic load in comparison to Black men, White men, and White women of their same age. This is related to gender and race-based stress and trauma and “high-effort coping”. The term used to describe the impact of this early deterioration on the body is, weathering. The added stress of navigating race and gender-based stress and trauma taxes Black women’s mental health and has detrimental health consequences on Black women’s bodies making them more susceptible to chronic illnesses and diseases such as hypertension; heart disease; diabetes; increased maternal health risks; and the wear and tear on the body makes Black women's bodies less likely to recover from disease and illnesses.
